The new partnership between GeFP and Hy-ON represents a significant development in the E-Fuel space, focusing on the production of Green Methanol in South Africa. This project, aiming to produce 800,000 tons of Green Methanol annually using renewable carbon sources, will initially deliver 20,000 tons per annum in the Vaal region.
By leveraging EKONAMI SE’s modular electrolysis and methanol synthesis equipment, GeFP plans to establish one of the largest Green Methanol production facilities globally. This initiative will significantly aid in decarbonizing South Africa’s marine and chemical sectors.

The project, expected to unfold over ten years, will also create a Green Methanol Corridor from Gauteng to KwaZulu Natal, aligning with the goals discussed at the South African Green Hydrogen Summit. This initiative, with a near 1 GW scope of supply, marks a substantial step towards sustainable chemical production and a greener energy future in South Africa.
